Knowing the Holy Spirit

Reading: John 16:1-15
Speaker: Paul McCabe

Divine Characteristics

ETERNAL – Has always been, is, and will always be.
Hebrews 9:13-14 “The blood of goats and bulls and the ashes of a heifer sprinkled on those who are ceremonially unclean sanctify them so that they are outwardly clean. How much more, then, will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself unblemished to God, cleanse our consciences from acts that lead to death, so that we may serve the living God!”
The word “Eternal” = without beginning and without end.

OMNIPRESENT – everywhere
Psalm 139:7-10 “Where can I go from your Spirit? Where can I flee from your presence? If I go up to the heavens, you are there; if I make my bed in the depths, you are there. If I rise on the wings of the dawn, if I settle on the far side of the sea, even there your hand will guide me, your right hand will hold me fast.”

OMNIPOTENT – means He is all powerful
Luke 1:35 “The angel answered, “The Holy Spirit will come on you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you.”
When the Holy Spirit comes upon us – He comes with all the power of Almighty God. Nothing is more powerful.

OMNISCIENT – That means He is all knowing
1 Corinthians 2:10-11 “The Spirit searches all things, even the deep things of God. 11 For who knows a person’s thoughts except their own spirit within them? In the same way no one knows the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God.”

Human Attributes

MIND – Romans 8:27 “And he who searches our hearts knows the mind of the Spirit”

WILL – 1 Corinthians 12:11 While speaking about the distribution of spiritual gifts it says, “All these are the work of one and the same Spirit, and he distributes them to each one, just as he determines.”

FEELINGS – Ephesians 4:30 “And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, with whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.”

He Engages in Activities like us

TEACHING – John 14:26 “But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you.”

WITNESSING – Hebrews 10:15 “The Holy Spirit also testifies to us about this.”

INTERCEDING – Romans 8:26 “In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us through wordless groans.”

SPEAKING – Revelation 2:7 “Whoever has ears, let them hear what the Spirit says to the churches.”

COMMANDING – Acts 16:6 “Paul and his companions travelled throughout the region of Phrygia and Galatia, having been kept by the Holy Spirit from preaching the word in the province of Asia. When they came to the border of Mysia, they tried to enter Bithynia, but the Spirit of Jesus would not allow them to.”

TESTIFYING – John 15:26 “When the Advocate comes, whom I will send to you from the Father—the Spirit of truth who goes out from the Father—he will testify about me.”
He witnesses to us, but He also witnesses of Jesus. Testifies to the truth of Christ.
